In accordance with the requirements of title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ("ADA"), the City of Des Moines, Iowa, will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in its services, programs, or activities.

Modifications to Policies and Procedures: Des Moines will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all City programs, services, and activities. For example, individuals with service animals are welcomed in City offices, even where pets are generally prohibited.

The City will not place a surcharge on a particular individual with a disability or any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids/services or reasonable modifications of policy, such as retrieving items from locations that are open to the public but are not accessible to persons who use wheelchairs.

Accessibility Statement

Section 508 Standard of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (29 U.S.C. 794d). Section 508 requires that when Federal agencies develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology, Federal employees with disabilities have access and use of information and data that is comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. Although not required by regulation or law, the City has adopted these standards and will be evaluating our site on a regular basis to serve its citizens who use assistive technology or who may have other needs, which may be served through Section 508 design principles.  The City seeks to bring these sites into basic compliance with Section 508 code.
