Youth Advisory Board

The Des Moines Youth Advisory Board coordinates with and advises the City's departments, boards, and commissions about issues concerning youth in the city. The board works with local agencies as needed and when deemed appropriate by the board to deliver services to youth and to advise youth of service providers. In addition, the board oversees in a responsible manner all programs and events sponsored by the board.

General Requirements

The Youth Advisory Board consists of 2/3 youth members and 1/3 young adult members. The board consists of 21 to 47 members.

  1. The youth members must be 14 to 18 years old at the time of appointment.
  2. The young adult members must be 19 to 25 years old at the time of appointment.
  3. Every member must be a resident of the city or attend an educational institution located in the city.
  4. A completed application for appointment to become a board member is required and must be submitted to the city clerk. All initial members to the board shall be appointed and approved by the city council from the eligible applicants. All subsequent board members including term renewals, shall be appointed and approved by the city council from the eligible applicants recommended as candidates for appointment by the board.
