Fire Prevention Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB) has adopted the following mission statement:

Through education, investigation, engineering, and enforcement the Des Moines Fire Department Fire Prevention Section is committed to protection the members of the Des Moines Fire Department and the citizens and guests of the City of Des Moines from the hazards of fire.

We believe this mission is carried out through six primary methods:

  • Investigation
  • Education
  • Enforcement
  • Engineering
  • Emergency Response
  • Economic Incentive

The Fire Prevention Bureau is led by the Fire Marshal, and staffed with 11 other staff members:

  • 2 Fire Protection Engineers,
  • 2 Fire Investigators,
  • 6 Fire Prevention Inspectors
  • 1 administrative clerk

The Fire Prevention Bureau conducts many activities, some of which include:

  • Fire inspections in commercial buildings for city and state licenses
  • Certificate of occupancy permits
  • General fire safety inspections
  • Hazardous operations permits
  • Acceptance testing of fire protection systems
  • Inspections of installation and removal of underground and above ground storage tanks
  • Inspections related to complaints
  • Plan review for compliance with the international fire code (2018 edition),
  • Coordination of lock box installations
  • Issuance of false fire alarm citations
  • General fire safety presentations
  • Fire extinguisher training classes
  • Public education presentations
