Explosive Detection K-9

ExplosiveDetectionK9The Des Moines International Airport, Des Moines Police Department, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office are using explosive sniffing dogs to serve on the front line of America’s War on Terrorism. The mobility of the K-9 teams is an advantage over fixed detector units. They identify dangerous materials threatening airport/airline safety and assist in the early detection of dangerous materials in vehicles, structures, or packages.

The K-9 is first trained for ten weeks by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).  When the officer gets the dog, they are together 24 hours a day and receive an additional eight weeks of training.

Some K-9’s come from a guide dog background, are two to three years of age and can be utilized up to 7-9 years of service.
