Forestry Crews Trimming Damaged Tree

Welcome to the Des Moines Public Works Department's Forestry Division page. We love promoting all things trees and can't wait to share our passion for urban forestry with you. As you explore, you'll find resources to get involved, address tree issues in the City and educational materials to help you take care of your own trees.

Our mission is to maintain a healthy urban forest by providing expert maintenance for the trees owned by the City or found in the right-of-way. We also offer support to residents and community members who would like to help us grow and maintain our urban canopy.

The Forestry division is responsible for trees on public property or in the City's right-of-way.  Right-of-way includes the paved portion of a street and a "border area" between the pavement and the adjoining property.  The trees Forestry maintains are located in the "border area", which is also typically occupied with utilities, fire hydrants, street signs, sidewalks, etc.
