Tiny Trees Neighborhood and Urban Nursery Program
Welcome to two exciting new projects to help grow the City of Des Moines’ urban canopy!
Using smaller seedling trees, which are known to outpace similar, larger trees within a few years, we are planning to fill in some of the 14,000 vacant street tree sites we have in the City of Des Moines. This allows our Forestry Division to fill in holes in our urban forest much more quickly.
There are two new efforts that both involve tiny trees as an efficient way to grow our urban forest. You can sign up for either one of them here:

Volunteer with Tiny Trees to help your neighbors grow Tiny Trees of their own.
Tiny Trees Neighborhood Program
Request that our City team plants a tiny tree in the right-of-way in your neighborhood. A City crew will plant the tree and equip it with solid protection, and you will help watch out for the tree. As it quickly takes off, you will have a tree similar in size to the one pictured above within 3 years! This tree only requires half a gallon of water 1 – 2 times a week during the summer.
Urban Nursery Program
What is an urban nursery? The City of Des Moines is trialing a new initiative where we supply citizens with;
- 1 (or more) Tiny Trees to start their urban nursery
- A pot to put it in
- Soil to plant it
You help grow the tree for 1 - 2 years, after which we will relocate the tree onto City property. We are hoping this would become part of a larger neighborhood planting, and with community involvement. If you are interested in participating, please register at the button below.
