Sioux City Brick Donates Land for Gray's Lake Park

Map of Sioux City Brick land donationDES MOINES, IOWA — Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019 – The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department announced today that Sioux City Brick, recently acquired by Brickworks N.A., the parent company of Glen-Gery Corporation, will donate a parcel of property for the Gray’s Lake Park Expansion Project. The 2.3 acres, located at 1200 Thomas Beck Road, is the last remaining parcel of land east of Gray’s Lake Park.

The Sioux City Brick donation will allow for an entirely publicly owned greenway east of the park all the way to SW 9th Street. Plans for the land include ecological restoration and the construction of nature trails to complement the 1.9-mile Kruidenier Trail loop that encircles Gray’s Lake.

“We are extremely grateful to Sioux City Brick for this generous donation of property,” said Ben Page, director of Des Moines Parks and Recreation. “This parcel of land will play a pivotal role in the eastern edge development of Gray’s Lake, one of the crown jewels in our parks system.”

Gray’s Lake Park is Des Moines’ busiest park and sees over 1.5 million visits per year. The addition of this land will provide room for additional passive recreation opportunities that are desired by residents of Des Moines and users of Gray’s Lake Park.

“This property housed part of a brick plant in the early 1900s and has been owned by Sioux City Brick for over 100 years,” said Mark Ellenor, President Brickworks, N.A. “Since acquiring the company in August, our company has been proactively seeking unique opportunities like the Gray’s Lake Park Expansion Project to expand our corporate commitment to supporting worthwhile community outreach and engagement initiatives.”
