Des Moines Family Receives Special Gift from DMFD
When Hedy and Tom Woolwine learned their home would need to be bought out by the City in order to make vital storm sewer improvements, it meant moving from a place they had filled with memories for 27 years. Recruits of the Des Moines Fire Department's 96th Training Academy were grateful to use the home for hands-on training and came across a special piece of the family's history in the process.
On a wall in the Woolwine's home, firefighter recruits found measurements the couple had made of their grandchildren's heights through the years. Names next to lines drawn on the wall told the story of how the family had grown. A marking near the bottom of the wall illustrated how an honorary Woolwine family member measured up—a figurine of Woody from "Toy Story" had his own spot on the chart. When the recruits recognized the significance of the wall, they requested to do something special for the family.
On Monday, Dec. 9, 96th Training Academy Class representatives paid a visit to the Woolwines, reminding the family they've always "got a friend" in DMFD.
