Filling in the Gaps: 40,000+ Feet of Sidewalk Construction Underway
DES MOINES, IOWA – Wednesday, June 24, 2020 – With the actions taken by City Council in April, construction is underway on more than 40,000 linear feet—that’s 7.5 miles—of sidewalks in neighborhoods all over the City of Des Moines.
The effort is part of the larger Neighborhood Sidewalk Program, a 20-year initiative to fill 180 miles of sidewalk gaps in Des Moines neighborhoods, with a focus on school recommended walk routes, connections to bus stops and commercial nodes, improving accessibility accommodations, and providing connectivity for long sections of existing sidewalks.
"This plan is critical to improve safety and walkability all over the City, and give students, DART users and pedestrians increased access to our schools, neighborhoods and City." shared Steve Naber, City Engineer. "This plan aligns with the City’s goals to continue improving the safety of the City’s transportation system for all users – pedestrians, bikes, transit, and automobiles, and provide a transportation system for all residents in every stage of life."
The completion of 7.5 miles of sidewalks is a dramatic increase from the City’s previous ability to fill less than a mile of sidewalk gaps each year. This large sidewalk program phase approved by City Council in April will be constructed starting this summer and completed in late summer/early fall 2021.
MoveDSM, the City’s transportation master plan aimed at providing sustainable transportation options to all Des Moines residents, identified 667 miles of sidewalk gaps throughout the city’s 952 miles of existing sidewalks.
