Pet License Deadline Approaching

DES MOINES, IOWA – Tuesday, August 18, 2020 – Monday, August 31 is the deadline to purchase City of Des Moines dog and cat licenses without incurring a $50 per animal late fee. Completed applications postmarked on or before August 31 will avoid the late fee.

City Ordinance requires all cats and dogs six months and older to have a license. The cost is $15 for dogs and cats that are spayed or neutered, and $35 for dogs and cats that are not spayed or neutered. Special rates are available for residents over 65 years of age. Applications are available on the City’s website at

Residents must provide a completed application and a current rabies vaccination certificate for each of their pets. Once everything is processed, the animal license tags will be mailed.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, City Administration Buildings are currently closed until at least October 1, 2020. The City Clerk’s Office is still available for business purposes Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Residents can submit applications and fees by mail or through a secure drop box at City Hall, 400 Robert D. Ray Drive.
