SW 1st Street Bridge rehabilitation to begin Monday, April 15
DES MOINES, IOWA – Wednesday, April 10, 2019 – The Southwest 1st Street Multi-Use Trail Bridge over the Raccoon River will be closed for structural repairs starting Monday, April 15, 2019. A detour route for the Meredith Trail utilizing the Fifth Street Bridge will be posted.
The trail across the bridge is anticipated to reopen in December of this year, with construction anticipated to be completed in summer of 2020.
This construction is part of the Bridges to Opportunity: Des Moines’ Community Connection project, funded in part by an $8 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant that the City successfully competed for in 2016.
Additional bridge construction as part of that project includes:
- Locust Street Bridge replacement — Anticipated to be completed in summer of 2020
- Historic Court Avenue Bridge rehabilitation — Anticipated to be completed in June 2019
- Scott Avenue Bridge rehabilitation — Scheduled to close in spring of 2020 and anticipated to be completed in summer of 2021
