Flashboard Installation Scheduled For Wednesday Morning
DES MOINES, IOWA — Monday, May 10, 2021 — The City of Des Moines will install flashboards at the Center Street Dam Wednesday, May 12 at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. Boaters on the Des Moines River and at Birdland Marina should be advised that starting the afternoon of Tuesday, May 11, water levels will be lower for 24 to 36 hours.
A team of city staff representing several departments determines the timeline for flashboard installation or removal. As the current levels on the Des Moines River are very low, it was decided that the flashboards needed to be returned to the dam in order to increase the water level and enhance water recreational activities on the river. The process includes adjusting the outflow at the Saylorville Reservoir dam so that city staff can walk on the Center Street Dam to install the flashboards. Upon completion, the outflow at Saylorville Reservoir dam is adjusted to fill up and elevate the water level.
