Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa — Monday, March 21, 2022 — Dust off your resumes, the Des Moines Fire Department is hiring and it’s looking to fill two classes of recruits with different backgrounds.

The DMFD, which responded to a record number of calls in 2021, will be filling one class of certified firefighter recruits who have experience as firefighters and one class of recruits who are not required to have firefighting backgrounds.

"Hiring both established firefighters as well as finding excellent candidates to start their careers with the DMFD is an excellent strategy to continue serving our residents at the highest level,” said Des Moines Fire Department John TeKippe. “These classes will help the DMFD maintain that level of service as our city grows and emergency calls continue to increase."

In addition to responding to 30,838 calls in 2021, a COVID-19 delayed academy class and higher than normal off-duty injury counts led to increased overtime for firefighters at DMFD.

The class of certified firefighters will allow DMFD to move that group of recruits through an accelerated Fire Academy and have them start serving in fire stations still in 2022. The typical Fire Academy takes 12-14 months.

“By Thanksgiving, this certified class will be responding to medical emergencies and putting out fires,” said TeKippe. “Their experience will help us build upon an already strong foundation of skills and knowledge that helps us provide excellent service to all who call us for help.”

Applications for both classes are open now and will close on April 15.
