Des Moines Public Works Earns Coveted Industry Accreditation
Des Moines, Iowa — Monday, April 4, 2022 — The Des Moines Department of Public Works recently earned full accreditation by the American Public Works Association (APWA), a distinction only awarded to one percent of Public Works departments in the United States.
APWA representatives were at this week’s City Council meeting and are touring the Public Works facilities and the Municipal Services Center II that is under construction and will become the new home of the Public Works Department this summer.
"We are honored to be designated as a fully accredited Public Works agency,” Des Moines Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. “It proves that our team is dedicated to serving Des Moines residents in an efficient and sustainable manner in the work our team does every day."
This accreditation formally verifies and recognizes that the agency is in full compliance with the recommended management practices set forth in APWA’s Public Works Management Practices Manual.
The Des Moines Public Works Department underwent a rigorous process of self-assessment, a formal application and a week-long on-site assessment with representatives of APWA who evaluated Public Works data and practices before recommending Des Moines Public Works for full accreditation.
“We strive to be leaders in the Public Works sector, Deputy Public Works Director Adam Smith said. “This isn’t just a recognition of what we’ve done, but a commitment by us to continue moving forward, improving our services to the community at every opportunity.”
This recognition sees Des Moines join Bettendorf and Davenport as the only APWA accredited agencies in Iowa and three of only 205 agencies across the country. Initial accreditation lasts four years and results in a re-accreditation process that focuses on improvement in APWA metrics.
